Darren Ferguson

Software Developer

Darren is one of our senior developers at Openband. With Openband since 2001, Darren has been a go-to resource, especially for difficult and time-critical solutions. If an issue arises, it hasn't been unusual to get to work on a Monday morning and find Darren is 4,000 miles away handling a problem or getting a project back on track.

As we have ventured deeper into Drupal for some of our projects, our enterprise solutions have required modules and technology integrations new to the expansive and flexible CMS. Darren's more recent contributions to the Drupal community include fixing OpenID for Drupal and extending the module into attribute exchange and working with another OpenBander, Alex Karshakevich, to bridge OpenID and Content Profile.

Chris Johnson

Software engineer

A software engineer at Openband, Chris has been writing software and managing projects for almost 30 years. He has long supported the open-source software philosophy and has been actively contributing to the open-source community since 1999.

A problem solver at heart, Chris's tendency for pushing systems past their breaking point has led him to develop a knack for identifying unique solutions to tricky situations. He supports Drupal through both the security and infrastructure teams, working to "pre-filter" emails to the security team members and helping find and provide issue solutions. Chris has devoted significant brain power to Drupal in his five and a half years working with the CMS, though often by helping solve other programmers' problems rather than making commits of his own.

In his free time ("What's free time?" he asks), Chris has pursued disparate activities, from flying helicopters and lapping race tracks in high performance cars to playing in a reggae band, renovating old homes and volunteering at non-profits. He is always on the look out for a good crème brûlée.

Dan Karran

Software engineer

A Solution Architect with a particular interest in geospatial information (the origin of his geodaniel name on drupal.org).

Dan works with M.C. Dean/OpenBand on a network of distributed Drupal sites that allow their users to share information and collaborate within their communities of interest, both in their own organisation and across partners. In addition to this, he works with small organisations as a freelance web developer to help them build their web presence using Drupal.

Involved with Drupal since 2005, Dan authored the GeoRSS module (now obsolete) and also the KML and Availability Calendars modules and has been involved with the design and testing of the many other modules built by his colleagues and associates.

His free time activities include photography and anything to do with maps, including helping build an open map of the world at OpenStreetMap.

Alex Karshakevich

Software engineer

Alex is a platypus of sorts for Openband. His portfolio packs not only application development, but platform development for e-commerce and search portals, as well as expertise in server layer applications. He's adept across the entire "technology stack," a tallent crucial in today's culture of mashing many opensource applications and technologies into one project.

Alex works on social networking and online collaboration tools for OpenBand. One of his current interests is seeing how online discussions and interations are shaped by participants.

Ben Lavender

Single Point of Failure

Ben is a rockstar systems admin/network engineer/developer currently hailing from the Big Easy. He's been with OpenBand since 2007 and has been a part of our expansion in the last few years. While occasionally getting his fingers in to all aspects of our projects, he spends most of his time in two areas: infrastructure design, where his varied experience comes in very handy, and as our buildmaster, where he manages the influx of production from our developers. Since these jobs preclude existing in a single time zone, he moves around a lot to keep things interesting.

Like many of our team members, Ben has been working with open-source software and platforms for much of his vocational life. To him, the right way to solve a problem involves using the best tools for the job.

John Lucas

Software architect

John is a thinker. Found more often than not staring intently at his screen, chin-on-fist, decyphering the activity patterns of users and how best to get them to stay on a page. John is at heart a problem solver - his education and a work focus have been on making user interfaces work. And to make them work well.

John's work with opensource started in 3D environments using X3D, the ISO 3D graphics standard, and simple virtual environments during his graduate work and has been at least partially opensource since.

Beate Ritz

Project Manager

Beate brings the other half of the development equation to the table. Her background in opensource project management brings a critical focus to not only coordinating projects but making sure others can use them. From supporting use case development and research, to documenting the process/solution and educating the client on its use, Beate helps Openband support our solutions through their entire life cycle.

Her three years immersed in opensource technology, though brief, have developed a keen interest in evangelizing open technologies in non-traditional arenas. She is passionate to help bring opensource to established business environments, demonstrating and educating potential converts on the benefits of open tech solutions and communities, from technology integration (mashing cell phones and email) to endless personalization provided by a truly "open" system.

Beate comes to Openband with an education in languages, economic and cultural studies. An established career in information technology includes freelance translation and consulting and time with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering and Automation in applied research.

A love for yoga and Pilates help offset the sometimes rigorous needs of managing multi-national projects, though Beate does enjoy the weekly (yes, every week) traveling her employment "provides." She is also hoping DrupalCon will provide a boost to her new proficiency in photography.
